The long awaited release of ‘The Simpsons Movie’ comes tainted with a feeling that it should have been made somewhere between five and ten years ago; when the series had been running long enough to warrant a film version, but before it started to so painfully lose it’s way.
The trouble with The Simpsons in recent years (and I never, ever thought I’d ever utter the words ‘The trouble with The Simpsons’) is that it’s needlessly felt the need to compete with the meteoric rise in popularity of Family Guy, by becoming increasingly violent, rude and politically incorrect.
Gone are the understated satire, intelligent parodies, and just plain funny jokes, all replaced by Homer snogging a cloned version of himself and Milhouse’s dad having his arm sliced in two, in an attempt to outdo a show that will struggle to retain it’s following past six or seven series.
I hope against hope that the film will deliver the golden day genius of what for twelve years was the funniest show on television, bar none. Though even if it doesn’t, it’s still likely to have the highest laugh-out-loud-jokes-a-minute of any other film released this year.
