Ploy for Play
…or decent addition to Weekend?
BLOC PARTY is back to get us ready for their upcoming date in Pompano (Sunday, May 27) with b-sides and fresh remixes from Vice Records’ February release Weekend in the City. The five-track Spring EP opens with the stomping album version of “The Prayer.”
“Prayer” was born for the dance floor, but PARA ONE’s chaos of melodies pinned to a typical beat leaves one wanting. DOES IT OFFEND YOU, YEAH? packed some surprises in their mix though. They stripped the track to its elements and dragged fat bass lines through crisp vocals. A simple beat closes on a grooving twist for a fine mix.
The final two tracks are bits written during the recording of Weekend. “We Were Lovers,” with its lush atmospheric guitars and brooding, romantic lyrics, begs Cure comparisons (yet again).
“England” has a trailing, lazy guitar sound that is both pleasing and sentimental, but the punk-style lyrics kind of lose their punch when the vocals sound like something off a Pink Floyd record.
Overall, you’re in for good dance tracks from the DJs, but the b-sides aren’t so good for the floor.
